Prayer 101

by Forrest Church, Minister Of All Souls Church (Unitarian Universalist) in New York City from 1978 until his death in 2009

Prayer is the art of listening. Reverent attention to something unites us with it. Distraction divides, fragmenting us. Salvation and sin are much the same. Salvation: wholeness, health, healing — all words stemming from the same root — occurs in this lifetime when we are at peace with ourselves, united with one another, and at one with God. Sin is a state of brokenness. It exists when we are consumed by preoccupations and distractions, inattentive to the needs of others, at war with ourselves and the world. MORE

  1. When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get several e-mails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove people from that service? Thanks a lot!

  2. One thing I think is important although it just may be the result of years of teaching in university: please cite the actual source for your excerpts; that is, not just “Forrest Church,” but the page and the book, the date of the sermon, the URL, whatever, that the excerpt comes from. If someone wants to read more or listen to more, that person then knows where to go. For example, Camus wrote a number of books, so if you excerpt from one, please tell the reader which one. However, in the case of something like Thoreau’s “Walden,” simply the chapter would do, given the many editions of that book. Thank you.
