Every now and again you meet a person who just stands out, who just seems to rise above the crowd of the ordinary. Perhaps these people are gifted with a special kind of charisma. Or perhaps they have simply refused to let the world erode away their uniqueness.
How do you cherish, defend and display the things that make you unique?
How do you cherish, defend and display the things that make you unique? …
I hide them – so people won’t keep crushing them … as they have, so often, in the past.
I don’t see much value in celebrating what is unique simply because it is unique or in conforming to the norm simply because it is the norm. I do admit that I sometimes do the latter as standing out too much can cause anxiety, but I feel best when I don’t stray to either extreme. I don’t think I should look, feel, think, act, etc. in a particular way because other people do – or don’t do – the same, but because I enjoy it, believe there is a moral imperative, find it pragmatic, or it helps someone else. I don’t always meet this standard – habits die hard and genetics are powerful – but I find it a useful standard nevertheless.
