Simplicity is a wonderful spiritual goal – to focus on the essentials, to treasure small things. But there is also beauty in complexity, whether it is the ornate shape and colors of a flower, or a life complicated by the intricate weaving of work, family, hobbies, care for others and care for self.
What do you love for its complexity?
One of the reasons I became a UU was due to Thoreau’s call of “Simplify! Simplify!” But even with less stuff, life is complicated. Better to clarify! Clarify!
I love the complexity of the various ecosystems around the world. I also like the complexity of my own mind.

The most enjoyable complex things that I have enjoyed in my life lately are grooming my dogs. I have to find just the right size comb to put on the clippers. I don’t want to skin them for then they would not be protected from the sun or bugs. If I do not shorten their coats enough they can become overheated & die. So I groom & bath them as gently as I can, try not to get water in their eyes or ears, or frighten them with too hard a spray or too hot or cold.
The other complex thing I currently enjoy is counted cross stitch. I am currently working on a wedding sampler for my son. I would like to finish it by his wedding date, but it will be a beautiful anniversary gift no matter on which anniversary it is completed!
As I think on this issue more, I realize that there are many complex activities in which I am involved that make my life beautiful indeed. But I must be aware of allowing these complexities take over my life, for I have learned an important trait of my personality is being swept away by enthusiasm & taking on too many complexities too handle. Then I become overwhelmed & cannot engage in the complexities that bring me peace.

My life. It is at times a challenge to love it, but I am committed.
