Holding to the String

“There are times in life when people must know when not to let go. Balloons are designed to teach small children this.”
―Terry Pratchett

What feels like it could escape from you, if you don’t hold tightly to the string?

  1. Balloons on strings seem to have a mind of their own. They escape and take off when they get the opportunity. What would we have them to do – stay on the finger or wrist forever? We must tend to our daily routines and being tethered even to a delightful balloon could become heavy and burdensome. In addition, the balloon will eventually lose it’s lightness and hang limp. What joy is there in that? In the case of balloons, as in all things, there’s a time to let it go. Hanging on and clinging are the ingredients for suffering.

  2. My book club selection for May is “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt. This sentence describes an unhappy romantic obsession of the main character:
“–a love more binding than physical affection, some tar-pit of the soul where I might flop around and malinger for years.” Ouch!
