Planting bulbs is an act of faith, believing in the unlikely proposition that sticking brown blobs in the ground during the fall will result in bright flowers come spring. Of course it doesn’t always work. Sometimes animals eat the bulbs, or they just never bloom. But just as often the bulbs multiply unseen under the ground, bringing you a profusion of flowers you never thought you planted.
When has your faith in someone or something brought more than you had imagined?
Years ago I decided to pursue a different profession. Here is the story: In Peru with the Peace Corps I established a small library for children in my living quarters (one room!). From that experience, when I returned, I decided to become a children’s librarian, without, however, a degree. Fortunately the Kansas City MO Public Library was willing to hire me as a children’s service branch librarian. From that came an opportunity through the state of Missouri and the Federal Government for a scholarship at a Canadian Library School in London, Ontario. Receiving my professional degree and following this, I was selected as the MO State Youth Consultant and spent 18 very satisfying years traveling the state, meeting fine children’s librarians and having wonderful experiences in this position. Never had I expected that this would happen.
