On the one hand we are called to play the Good Samaritan on life’s roadside; but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life’s highway.
—Martin Luther King, Jr.
What will you do on this day of action to transform the road that destines so many to injustice?

Not today, but yesterday at the UU fellowship, I talked with friends about what to do re MLK JR Day. Our sermon included his words regarding “being DIS-satisfied” and doing something other than just respecting his words. I mentioned that I thought that the day should be devoted to Community Service of some kind that would relate to better understanding among the ethnic groups in our nation. My idea evolved for me since the Returned Peace Corps conferences usually include a day of service in the city where located. Last year , for MLK JR day, during that period we took up a collection to present to a local elementary school since they needed public bus passes for those students who didn’t qualify for school bus transportation during cold weather and presented the fund to them at a school assembly. We also donated funds to the school library. I suggested that next year with enough time to plan we, as a fellowship, should offer some type of service to the school, which is ethnically diverse as well as in a low income area of our city. I’d like to see Service Days connected the MLK JR Day everywhere.
