Downhill

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADoes the phrase “It’s all downhill from here” mean “It all gets worse from here” or “From here everything gets easier”? I suppose it depends on where the coast downhill will land you, and you can never be sure of that until you have finally arrived.

What in your life is on a downhill coast?

  1. As the question suggests, there are two ways of considering “a downhill coast”. Both would be considered gradual, I believe; this indicates that they are each in their own way a slow transition to something that is changing but with a result at the end. Here are two considerations for me: (1) in retirement, the temptation (as well as opportunity) is to fill days and nights with all kinds of activities that have been unavailable during working years. I am recognizing these pleasures during the over twenty years of retirement. However, I see that now it is time to choose which to follow and which to eliminate from my live. Choices must be made in order to let life be interesting but not stressful. (2) The other trip that I am recognizing is the final down hill trip that leads to my death. How much time in life is there for me? How will the coasting progress? What plans can I make for it? How much time should I spend on considering the end of my life? Some say “Think about today; don’t worry about tomorrow”; but I feel that both my life and death are part of a plan for me to integrate, if possible. Enjoy today but know that tomorrow may not come. I am trying to understand each in its own way.
