Nothing could be plainer than a brick, a baked slab of clay mud. But that same mud is also the basis for elaborate flowered decoration. For that matter, in the Hebrew story of Genesis it is the material from which human beings are made.
What wonderful thing have you made from the plainest building blocks?
A button. Made of (mud) clay. Designed by me. With a special rounded shape and a cut away design. A clay loop fastened to the back. Green ware fired in the kiln. Glazed with a dark brown glaze pre mixed by me. Set on stilts again in the kiln for a second firing. Result: a little glowing, smooth rounded brown button with an abstract design. Just the style to use as one special button on one special garment. Who says that a lump of (mud) clay can’t be turned into a beautiful but still useful piece of art?
One of the best dinners I made in the last couple weeks was simple pasta mixed with kale and sweet Italian sausage topped with ricotta that had lemon zest and juice mixed in. Very little effort, low cost, but it was as good as something at one of the city’s best restaurants.
Sounds delicious! A very creative dish with little cost or effort. Congratulations!
Peace pipes! Not easy for elementary aged kids, but so very satisfying when we figure out how to make the stem open into the bowl. And so much fun for the teachers to explain to the parents!
what a creative project! Similar to one I taught as an elementary art consultant. The fifth grade teacher and I worked together with the students from beginning to end: digging up the clay, sifting, screening it; making green ware; firing it; glazing it and firing in a final time. What pride the students in both groups must have had with their work!
