Holding Hands

hands on black - morguefile creative commonsDancers create a community of touch, joining hands over and over, letting go over and over to connect with the next person down the line.

What community—physically present or not—holds your hand?

  1. My friend who has Parkinson’s Disease is one with whom I hold hands as often as I can. He responds sometimes with a firm grasp, or a squeeze; other times it as if there is no one there. I keep on holding hands with him in hope that the touch will help him respond. One other time I visited Aunt Bess (not my aunt, but…) in the nursing home; other people had said don’t bother, she won’t respond to you. I went anyway; I touched her hand, then held it in mine, and THEN she squeezed back. This was one of the times that I knew there was still thinking and emotion going on inside of a tired body.
