Emily Dickinson famously wrote that “Hope is a thing with feathers.” But sometimes hope arrives as something lighter still, even a single feather.

Regarding the Emily Dickinson quote about “hope being something with feathers,,” it may be worth mentioning the aspect of how birds maintain their feathers. Hopefully this does not detract from the delightful image she has provided.
One of the more interesting aspects of bird behavior is the act of “preening.” Birds often align their feathers by pulling them through their beak. Presumably this not only makes them look their best, but also makes their feathers in trim for flight. At the cost of stretching a wonderful metaphor to its limits, perhaps it works best when we maintain the fragile but necessary elements which aid our hopes.

How far we have come in analyzing the inside as well as the outside of our bodies. Even the technology is better; the once big, thick needles used have now become just a prick now!
