Can’t Judge a Book

blind date with a book - cc0We judge books by their covers all the time. We also judge people based on a variety of factors like size, age and color that tell us remarkably little about the person inside.

What helps you to look beyond the surface of the people you meet?

  1. I have often been wrong by judging people by appearance. Now I listen to what people say and notice if their lives back up what they claim to believe. Talk is cheap. Appearance is deceptive.

  2. Characteristics such as:
    #1# Personality type(s)
    #2# Career/ Job Description
    #3# Nationality
    #4# Condition(s) and Situation(s)
    #5# Place(s) of Residence

  3. It would still seem to me that truly, at first, I judge a person by the “cover” they wear. By that I include the style of clothing, the apparent healthfulness in their physical appearance and also their neatness in body. Regardless of other factors, I believe these are universal features. However, I try to understand that because of circumstances, some people are unable to appear in these ways. A homeless person, for instance, may reflect this lack by necessity. However, I try, regardless of “cover”, to establish an understanding of them by vocal means; talking for while may open the door to understanding, even though it may take time and opportunity to carry this on long enough to do this.
