Something to Say

BarkingLionThe barking of colony of sea lions can be heard a long way from the shore. Apparently being a sea lion is a very noisy job. We’ve all felt oppressed by being in the midst of an inescapable racket, but there are also times when it feels good to take up space and be loud.

In what situations do you like to be noisy? When do you like to be quiet?

  1. Noisy?: really noisy in a crowd or where there is a protest group, NEVER. When I am in a group, protest or cocktail party or such, I decline from talking or shouting, I use signs instead at a protest. The only time I can think of wanting to “make a loud noise” is at a concert when the performer deserves acclaim but even then I am waving hands and cheering a little.
Quiet?: WHEN I’M ALONE. I was raised in a home that was fairly quiet, an only child, but with supportive, loving parents. Quiet for occasional music that I enjoy listening to. However, even when I was a student or working on a project, I always liked quiet. I am definitely not a multitasker; music in the background when I’m involved in a project disturbs my thinking because I follow the melody or rhythm and I can’t concentrate on something else.

  2. I like to be quiet most of the time. I enjoy being noisy when I am enjoying hearty laughs with others, e.g. watching a funny movie, TV show or play. I find the laughter (mine and others’) noisiest at a live play. And we now know that laughter is very good for our health.

    1. You’re right! I didn’t think of that raucous time when everybody laughs and laughs together ! Of course I do too.
