Eid al Adha, the Muslim feast of sacrifice, honors Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his beloved son to fulfill God’s command. Sacrifice is a complicated subject, and one that many of us have an ambivalent relationship to.
When have you willingly make a sacrifice for the greater good? When have you resisted the call to sacrifice when you felt it would cause unwarranted harm?
A two pronged question:
(1)MAKING a sacrifice…if I’m a member of a committee, and choose to remain as a member even if I’ve spoken against it, if the voting decision goes against my belief. I choose to support it for the good of what the committee may accomplish. (2) AVOIDING a sacrifice…silly, perhaps. but when I can, I trap an insect invading my home place, carefully transport it outside (sometimes in a tissue)and give it its freedom!
