Surely we’ve all had fantasies about a truly universal remote that would allow us to pause time, or fast forward it, or run time backward to replay a scene we loved.
How would you use such a universal remote?

One of the things I teach is that it is the rule, not the exception, for a speaker and a listener to have at least slightly different notions of the meaning of the speaker’s statement. We even do impromptu experiments to prove this. So, I would use the universal remote to replay the exact words of conversations that left me, or the other person, feeling bad in some way. That way, I could think about the words and ask, “What did you mean by…?” and “Did you think I meant…?” We could nip a lot of conflicts in the bud.
Knowledge of meaning and agreement on use among discussants so important; it does allow for a profitable conversation, I believe. Thanks.
I have considered this sort of topic (EX: two different reactions by viewers of a painting) and I truthfully expect that there will be, and should produce different reactions. Different fields of study, or situations.
Good thoughts, Margaret.
This comes to mind for me: one day, in a small cruiser,in the Mediterranean off the coast of Malta, we were rounding the west side of the island and suddenly there were these magnificent cliffs , high above us, with delicious designs and shapes that were a fascinating sight to see. I’d like to see this spot again or I’ll be happy if I can reproduce the feeling I had in pictorial form.
I can identify with that. I’ve read that, when sightseeing, if you are constantly photographing everything, you don’t remember the sight as you actually saw them with your eyes. And in my case, the pictures are never as impressive as the naked-eye view.
I hope this doesn’t sound too….strange, etc. I’m a little nervous admitting to this, because of the age I was when this happened.
In 1985, when I was 15, my father and I moved from county X to county Y and I had to start a new school. My first week in my new school, I met one of the senior girls – and I can only say it really was love at first sight, even at that age.
Over the years, something did develop between us. It took time, but it happened. Now, some 30+ years later, for all that we are both married and she has kids, the love is always here.
I’d like to go back to one particular moment, a magical moment that I did not take advantage of. This moment could have been our first kiss, but I hesitated; I didn’t want to push things too fast with her.
I’d go back, and see what would happen if I did kiss her that night. Oooh la la! 😉
I don’t think it is strange. It is natural to wonder about things like that. Just so we don’t get bogged down with regrets, but rather, keep living the best lives we can at present.
I, too, have wondered what if I had patched up a quarrel with X or Y and kept dating him, and so forth. Fortunately, my conclusion has always been, “There but for grace go I.” 🙂
