Earth Day is not just a celebration of our glorious planet—it is most importantly a reminder of the responsibility each of us holds to protect and promote the health of the living networks we belong to.
What will you do today to honor and protect life?
I will continue to recycle papers, cans and compost vegetation. I will turn off the water during the time I am not actively using it . I will remind people that today is Earth Day. This next year I will seek out other ways to conserve, recycle, reuse before I replace.
Despite living in a city, today I had the joy of seeing a woodchuck, probably a juvenile, and three wild turkeys sitting in the neighbor’s tree.
As always, I recycle. I only run full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine–which is especially important since (for now) we have an older washer, which (according to the show “This Old House”) uses about 40 Gallons per load. Some day we will get new appliances, but for now, full loads and wearing clothes more than once before washing.
I’m eagerly awaiting the start of our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) season. We get organic produce, support a new generation of farmers, provide jobs for refugees, and have enough to share with friends.
I’m a big fan of reusable menstrual supplies (also good for bladder leaks). (Naming names for those interested–I’m a satisfied user of Gladrags, Lunapads, DearKates, and Thinx.) Cotton flannel is much more comfortable than plastic.
Thanks, Maggie, for all of your thoughts and information.
