Any personal act of creation happens in the context of all that has gone before. No idea or craft or skill or technique exists in a vacuum. The only way to create is together with those who have gone before us and those who surround us.
Whose creations have particularly inspired your own?
This is exactly what we discussed in one of our classes that I attended as an art education student at Pratt Institute,. Brooklyn, NY. Many times the creation of something “new” is larger, smaller, more detailed, less detailed, etc. Creativeness builds on the previous. However, I have always thought that Alexander Calder, who created a multitude of Mobiles and Stabiles as indoor and outdoor works of art was one who created something that was to a great degree not based on previous works of art. Perhaps I am proven wrong, but I consider him as an artist who took an extremely individual path in creating his works.
