“Re-examine all you have been told. Dismiss what insults your soul.” ―Walt Whitman
What beliefs have you discarded because they insulted your soul?

That God is a person, and that person is male.
That being a man makes one qualified to be a priest. I’ve known several priests who are terrible people. Meanwhile, a woman who devotes herself to God, who is pure of heart and intelligent, and all the ideals of what a priest should be, can only have a secondary role, at best. She would make a better leader for the congregation, but her gifts aren’t put to best use here, and the people can get stuck with a bad leader who got his job by being male.
I told my parents I wanted to be a Protestant when I was 12. They weren’t happy about it. In the many years since, they also left the Catholic Church. The sex abuse scandals were a catalyst, but there were many more factors.
When I was a young adult, I tried with difficulty to pray to a god, but to no avail. It seemed like an empty procedure. I have since joined in the company of like minded companions in my UU fellowship and find that the participation in and giving to it what talents I can gives me the opportunity to show gratitude as well as trying to satisfy my curiosity about spirituality. I still don’t pray.
