Simplicity is a wonderful spiritual goal – to focus on the essentials, to treasure small things. But there is also beauty in complexity, whether it is the ornate shape and colors of a flower, or a life complicated by the intricate weaving of work, family, hobbies, care for others and care for self.
What do you love for its complexity?
I love singing Bach and other Baroque music. The way the counterpoint fits together makes me feel like I’m a gear in a perfect machine. That is not to say the music is soulless, but that the precision and efficiency keep the music going almost by its own power.
I don’t really like insects but when I see detailed drawings of them I am fascinated at the complexity of their bodies and appendages. I’ve always heard that insects are much more numerous that we humans and I think that perhaps they will take over the world some time, if they haven’t already!.
