How do you dare to create community?

I try to make it a point, as a Caucasian. to smile at others in our society who are “of color”. If they smile back, that’s OK but in not, that’s OK, too. I figure that a smile can open up new ideas in all of us and this is one way I try to do it. More times than one might expect, the smile gets returned or a short conversation ensues. I think to my self, “It can’t hurt”.
