You can’t, we are told, step in the same river twice. The water is always moving, and life never holds still so that we can freeze the moment. But you can float with the river, holding to your same river by moving along with it, keeping the moment by releasing yourself to move as it moves.
What helps you to “go with the flow”?
Music.
Yes, a river or a rivulet shows me that it is flowing, flowing and then suddenly it changes in some way. A little bit swirls around and is diverted; something drops into the water…a leaf…and suddenly swirls away into a definitely new place and time. The river simile itself tells us that we, too, are in a state of flowing and that, along our way, we find incidents that tell us that we ourselves chose change and are changed by forces that we do not control. What we do about these events is life itself.
