Compassion

“We live in a time when science is validating what humans have known throughout the ages: that compassion is not a luxury; it is a necessity for our well-being, resilience, and survival.”
―Joan Halifax

  1. I live in Houston. Had no damage from Harvey. Still, it was hard, wondering when the streets would be passable. Did I have enough supplies till the streets were passable. And worrying about others. Since I did not lose electricity or internet, I found that making online donations to relief efforts helped me.

  2. When my long time friend Will died, I decided that even though I was invited by a member of the family to attend the memorial service, I declined. To me it would have caused a diversion of introductions and perhaps confusion to the children who would wonder why I was there even though I had been with Will at some family gatherings. I sent a box of dried flowers, many of them from bouquets he had given me, and was assured that they would be scattered along with his cremains at the family farm. This gave me a sense of comfort that I was there too.
