For Halloween we dress up in costumes and masks, magically transforming ourselves into what we are not. Or what we truly are.
What mask or costume would show the real you?

How about NO costume? That’s the real me plus a little bit more of this or that! I always challenge the young who come by wearing my own MADE UP costume…no$$$ spent. This year I will wear my Detective black/white hat. my black/white wool cape and carry a magnifying glass to ask them “what trick will you play?” I will be called Sherlocabella Holmes! . Then, of course, a friendly Halloween greeting. it’s that way, now.
Sherlocabella Holmes sounds divine!
My costumes that would show the real me:
Dog–A recent internet quiz said I was a dog in a past life. Not that I take much stock in those quizzes, but I often suspect it.
A man, TBD–I’ve felt for many years that I have extra male essence in me.
I saw Eddie Izzard on a talk show recently, and he was talking about how he has a “girl mode” and a “boy mode”. I think I have a less pronounced version of that.
I’m interested in trying performing as a “drag king”, which is a woman dressing and performing as a man. I’ve had a lot of thoughts about my male alter-ego. I’m 5’7″ and heavy set, so a male version of me would probably look like Bobby Moynihan or Jonah Hill. But my inspiration for a male self or drag persona would be Mr. Humphries on a British show from the 1970s/80s called “Are Your Being Served?”. He’s very camp/flamboyant (couldn’t say gay, so implied heavily), clever, loves who he is, doesn’t care what others think, is very friendly, has interesting friends, and loves his mom. He’s always gracious and (mostly) helpful. He’s almost a magical presence. I loved him when I first watched the show on PBS as a teen, and sort of wanted to be him.
Maggie, I watched that show too and really liked all of the characters, but, as you did, especially Mr. Humphries! You are right: he didn’t let anyone interfere with who he was and what he wanted to be. Hope you can feel that way sometimes, too!
