Airplanes or cars or high-speed trains take us where we want to go with wonderful efficiency. But in getting to the destination you can miss details of the journey that might be a highlight on bicycle or foot.
In what settings do you like to take the slow route?
Actually, by ignoring the warning about “fast” travel, I found recently that I was in the slow mode while taking a journey on a plane ride. I do not use distractions by reading, etc. and by sitting in a window seat. We had been warned that it might be a bumpy ride, but we soared above the clouds into blazing sunlight and with what appeared as a soft down, lumpy blanket of clouds below. During the flight, I watched a rainbow circle in the sky backed by some high clouds and as we lowered, the reflection of our plane in the middle. I talked with the pilots later and they said that this appears sometimes when the sun helps to cast this interesting form. This was a slow ride for me because I didn’t want it to end. A beautiful episode in my life.
I used to do a lot of business in England. I liked to take the tube or a cab to a destination to be sure I was on time and not get lost. Then I would walk back to hotel or client quarters, take my time and look at all the sights along the way.
