Halloween has moved a long way past its history of appeasing spirits—or even appeasing children who threaten tricks if they don’t get treats. But at least in some places it remains as a unique example of a time when people are eager to share with every random stranger who comes to their door, giving away sweets simply for the pleasure of giving them away.
