Our Muslim siblings have begun their holiest month of the year, Ramadan. Each day from sunrise to sunset, they fast to become closer to Allah, to have the practice of rigid spiritual discipline, and to bring them into solidarity with those who regularly do not have enough to eat. As this Ramadan begins, many Muslim people are thinking daily of the 600,000 Palestinians in Gaza who are on the brink of starvation.

In solidarity with those who do not have enough to eat, find out what you can do about starvation in our world today, especially that caused by humans.

What would it mean if we approached differences with curiosity, if we were driven by a deep desire to connect with and learn from others? How would it change our behavior if things we did not understand were met with connection instead of judgment?

We also celebrate and honor the many ways in which we are all the same. We find commonalities that connect us to all of humanity.

When have you found something in common with someone you thought you were different from?

We embrace the differences in humanity. It is not enough simply to recognize them–we honor and celebrate them. Differences make us stronger.

When have you forged a relationship across difference?

 

Unitarian Universalists have long affirmed the “free and responsible search for truth and meaning.” Too often, we remember the “free” part of that without paying attention to what is (and is not) responsible. Let us seek to be responsible to the impact of our search on others.
