Pluralism

This month, we are exploring the theme of pluralism–how we live together in a community of difference, how we celebrate and honor that difference, how that difference enhances our lives.

How has your life been enhanced by the differences among humans?

Jazz

In jazz, members of an ensemble must incorporate the mistakes their fellow musicians make into their own music, building upon them and responding to them.  To not do so would only highlight the mistake, creating music that is ugly and hard to listen to. The responsiveness of a jazz ensemble to mistakes is the musical equivalent of the essence of community.  The ensemble must live interdependence in order to create art.

How have you responded and built on mistakes to make something beautiful?

Shared Brokenness

“We are all broken by something. We have all hurt someone and have been hurt. We all share the condition of brokenness even if our brokenness is not equivalent. The ways in which I have been hurt—and have hurt others—are different from the ways [others have] suffered and caused suffering. But our shared brokenness connect[s] us.” -Bryan Stevenson
How have you connected to others through your brokenness?
