Newts are small, delicate amphibians that would make a perfect snack for all kinds of larger creatures, except for one thing – they are poisonous, and their bright skin serves as a warning to would-be predators.
How do you let others know not to mess with you without ever going on the offense?
October 11th marks National Coming Out Day, a celebration and an encouragement for those who would take the next step in being open and honest about their lives. Although Coming Out Day was established with the LGBTQ community in mind, there are endless ways in which each of us can move down the path of openness and honesty.
What is the next step for you in sharing your authentic self with the world?
When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability… To be alive is to be vulnerable.

How are you vulnerable as a grown-up in ways that you weren’t as a child?
There is no question that the flamingo is a very odd bird, from its flamboyant color and outrageously long neck and legs to its enormous, curved beak. But you never see people putting replicas of “normal” birds like sparrows and starlings in their yards.
How do you like to be a bit outrageous?
The seed head of the dandelion appears to be incredibly fragile—a puff of breath or a strong wind can make it fall apart. But that’s its function. The whole point of the round ball of fluff is to fall apart so that individual seeds can fly on the wind and plant themselves somewhere new.
How have you allowed something to fall apart so that something new could be born?
